USAF 604 Build Progress.......

Post by ffuries »

Build update.......Met up with a buddy and.....

Barrel installed, along with the handguards, and 3 prong flash hider, along with the gas tube installed and pinned.

The rear sight is being a pain, we couldn't get the roll pin to start at all, he didn't have the A1 sight tool to install the front sight, and didn't want to tear up the rivet and swivel trying to install swivel.

So the sling swivel and front and rear sights need installed still......But it now looks like a proper rifle from the distance.

Couldn't be more grateful for the work he did for me, getting me this far.

CINC Household and I managed to install the front sight. So the sling swivel needs installed then I can mount the sling. Plus the rear sight drum, detent and detent spring and that damn roll pin (Flat spring, aperture and screw are already installed). We have compressed the end of the roll pin just a bit and it still won't go into the hole. Stopping for the day before I get frustrated.

What's the diameter of roll pin and inside diameter of hole? The hole must be several thousands smaller. It's looking good so far. :text-bravo:
I live in America, why do I have to press 1 for English? :confusion-confused:

For the life of me I can't find the micrometer.....I'd misplace my brain if it wasn't locked in my skull, and I hadn't lost the key for the lock!

Later CINC Household and I are going to lube the pin and drum hole (Sounds dirty, LOL), and see if we can start the roll pin. I'm hoping once it's started it'll be a simple install after that.

That will leave the front sling swivel install to complete the build. Already have a sling, and I have a bayonet inbound.

The rear A1 sight came as complete kit/set, containing the aperture, flat spring, windage drum, detent, detent spring, windage screw, and roll pin. So one would think the parts would fit....

Waiting on a few little parts to show up. They got lost in transit and are now slated to be here on Tuesday.

Decided to go with the roll pin for the front sling swivel versus the rivet. Seems the early ones used a roll pin. While it won't be 100% correct, it's some of the little details that makes it look better.

My Sciatica is still kicking my backside, but I am moving around better now than I have been.

The Faux 604 built (No fun switch), has been sitting off to the side. Everything was moving along pretty good until it came to the A1 rear sight drum pin and the front sling swivel pin. They didn't want to go in no matter what I did. Then my Sciatica kicked my arse and it sat there unfinished.

Well, I was sitting here staring at the idiot box, and decided to give the two pins another shot, and fifteen minutes later I was looking at a "COMPLETE" Faux USAF M16 604.

20 inch pencil barrel, A1 pistol grip, A1 rear sight, A1 front sight, triangular handguards, Type D buttstock, slab side upper (No forward assist, no shell deflector), 3 prong flash hider, green M1 style sling and small pad ejection port cover. Has a full fence versus a partial fence that the original/early ones had. I went with the full fence since when I originally enlisted in 1986 and up to when we converted to the M16A2, the rifles were a mixture of M16, A1 and A2 parts. So I shot 604s which had A2 lowers.
