New SMLE book

Post by 72 usmc »

A Collectors View: The SMLE Rifle, Short Magazine, Lee Enfield 1903-1989, by Lance Lysink 2021.

There is a new book I have not read or seen about SMLEs and we all love the SMLE. I am trying to get the author to post its table of contents:

I hope to provide more info in the following days. This book has 300 pages, so figure 150 double sided pages in some form of binding??? Approximately $80 plus shipping. The author produced a very short run. A short notification is on GB. No reviews or comments from reviewers.

Contents, and it is glued paperback. Most likely like most contract environmental or archaeological reports. If after 20 years the binding splits, then use one of the 300 page monster staplers to hold it together. They use normal to 1.5" staples that are extra heavy duty. I use mine to staple old reports from the 1980-90s to hold them together - a perfect repair. Some bindings have the staples under the cover, they are hidden by the stiff poster board like cover that is glued over the leafs. A good many paperback antique guides are made this way. I ordered mine.

I set mine copy into a Leatherette Co. Springback binder and I have an instant hardcover and the heavy spring keeps the glued binding tight so I do not crack the binding.
  Not cheep, but I use these for keeping paperbacks intact for limited run archaeological reports. In days of old your original typed MA or PhD was put in these binders for the review committee. :shhh: older than dirt- ya there were typed documents

Here is my review I posted on GB
Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end (?) of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle.

So my book arrived. To say it is a valuable resource is saying way too little. It covers the rifles, the bayonets, the striper clips, wire cutters, and grenade firing devices. And much more... It blew me away. The authors life time knowledge is written down. The book has high quality glossy pages and clear, diagnostic photos exhibiting the details he talks about. There are 10-20, and sometimes more photos on almost every page. It is difficult to find a page lacking photos. Close up details and attributes that define different models are clearly shown. What makes this book brilliant are the photo mosaics providing close-up, detailed, professional, color photos of stock cartouches, marker’s marks, and overviews of the rifles particular sections. The receiver strap stampings, inspection stamps, acceptance marks, stock cartouches, bolts, bolt heads, barrel bands, sights, triggers, magazines, butt plates, nose caps are all shown in exquisite detail. An added plus are the views of the bayonet and scabbard markings by manufacturer and numerous military historical context photos showing soldiers with the SMLE. This is a Enfield specialist reference. The author's emphasis is on describing each SMLE's unique features primarily through photos and then by excellent verbal description. If you own an SMLE you want this book. Thank God I ordered one.

I say get on the list, do not be a cheep fool, this is a book you will treasure and if us fellow collectors are lucky, Lance will print a second batch. I am surprised he did not try to print this through Mowbray publishing company. It is privately published at his cost and will be in high demand. The paper is high quality and the font and size is perfect for old eyes. Photos varry in size, but are perfect to show diagnostic indicators. It is paperback with a Pur glue binding where the pages have a Pur adhesive on the spine like scientific publications or journals. It should last about 15-20 years. I would have liked to see a section sewn, perfect binding where page packets are folded in small sections and sewn then glued together like more expensive research paper backs like Mowbray & others produce for longer life expectancy of the binding. Hardcover would have added about 60 % to its cost. Below is a photo of the binding.

A slightly better paperback binding looks like this

If you are sitting on the fence, you best get on the authors "want a copy list" and consider yourself lucky indeed if Mr Lysiuk goes to the effort to reprint another 100 copies and all the trouble and his time packaging & shipping them out to fellow collectors. I would like to thank Mr Lance Lysiuk for writing this important reference and his time and efforts to get copies to all that ordered one. The book is beyond fantastic. THANK YOU 👍
And thanks for the special shipping.

Second Printing of A Collectors View, The SMLE has arrived
Greetings All

First I would like to thank everyone for the support I have received for my book, I did not think it would be as popular as it turned out.

With the first printing sold out and a waitlist started I ordered a second 100 books for those who wished a copy and had to wait. I have hopefully contacted everyone on the waitlist and filled their request. If anyone else is interested in getting a copy please let me know. They are still $80 plus shipping, in the US $5 via media mail, $12 for priority mail envelope and $17 for priority box. International rates vary on location.

Just send me a PM if you are interested.
