a test for the smart ones? need help

Post by 72 usmc »

Marine HQ at Belleau Woods sometime after June 1 1918. Two views of Stereoview cards from Keystone. View 19207 prior to cemetery 1 June 1918, view 19254 burials & cemetery of 1918 present and prior to their removal prior to aug 1919. QUESTION the Marine on the door is in the structure. Where is he standing ? He is looking south to the hill.

VIEW 19207
This overview is facing away from the hill, looking north to the Marine HQ destroyed building? No burials are yet established. After battle damage, but yet no burials. Later the guy in the next photo is in this house looking south, but where is he standing on the roof as seen in VIEW 19254? Anyone have an idea?

VIEW 19254 burials & Marine on door
This is a later view with the first cemetery of Marine dead seen over the left shoulder of the Marine standing on the door top overlooking the hill. This small first burial plot of June 1918 was latter moved summer of 1919 and re interned to the Belleau wood cemetery at the base of the hill.
Where do you think this guy is standing? The third photo is my best guess( see arrow)

Third photo I think he might be standing here. Anyone got a better location?

Another view of the HQ and 1918 cemetery seen over the left shoulder of the marine on the door. Not sure how this photo is facing on this post card?

These are hard to figure out notice the chimney locations are different. I just do not have any idea where he might be standing and if he is facing south toward the hill in view 19254. I wonder if this negative is reversed on this post card of the cemetery??? I see a hill behind the house . it should be in front of the cemetery???

I think two views we're taken with the camera on the road, the other faces the road with the marine looking south to the road and hill.

I'm not smart enough to sort it out but those are some great historical photos.

Lots of great stuff on Belleau Wood. I collect original photos, stereo view cards, post card booklets or the individual cards, magic lantern slides and the maps of Belleau wood. Lots of great books too. :shhh:
