N0 4 mk 1 bolt removal

Post by Roy mcleod »

My son and I, were cleaning No 4 mk 1 rifle bores.
My son said Dad, why does it seems like these rifles have two methods of bolt removal.
I, exp it is possible, two reasons.
ONE
The rifles spring loaded catch assy, was problematic to remove.
TWO
Production costs/cutbacks, to mill out the spring catch area.

There is only one method of bolt removal on a No4 Mk1 (no star).
Bolt forward, depress catch hold catch down retract bolt fully release catch.

However the No 4 Mk1 * (star) has a simplified for wartime production shortcut where a piece of the bolt head rail is removed allowing the bolt head to be removed by situating the bolt head flange in the cut in the rail & flicking it up.
Its arguably the weakest point in the design as the rail & bolt head raceway can crack or chip rendering the rifle dangerous to use.
That's why it denoted as changed by the addition of the star.

No problem.
The British system is confusing if you aren't immersed in it.
Its a 3-tier designation.
{Item} {Number} {Mark},{star (or not)}.
RIFLE, No 4 Mk1, or RIFLE No4 Mk1 * for example
RIFLE, Number (major new design), Mark (variation on Design) & "*" Minor tweak to "Number" & "Mark". (Its also possible to have several stars & even have some of them crossed out)!
