My army M2 carbine

Post by nrobertb »

Back in 1962 I was stationed at an artillery battalion in South Korea. We all carried beat up old M2 carbines that had been in use for years. One day word came down that we were to restore the stocks and handguards by scraping them with a piece of glass and then hand rubbing in multiple coats of oil.

I didn’t feel like doing all that tedious work. The company switchboard operator had to be on duty all night with nothing much to do. For a couple of bucks he was glad to do the stock for me.

He did a beautiful job and I was proud of that stock. Well, shortly thereafter we were told to turn in our carbines to the arms room and be issued a brand new carbine.

Bye bye beautiful stock! I’ve often wondered where those old carbines ended up. Sold to a foreign nation? Given to the Korean army? Who knows. I hope whomever ended up with mine appreciated that stock.
